Do people "hook up" a lot in college?

I'm going to be a freshman next year in college, and I'm confused about hooking up at college. Do you just go to a party and hook up with a random person you don't know, orr is it a person you know and might be a friend but you just feel like hooking up and nothing more? And do girls just have a lot with random guys?? I'm a girl, so I don't know what it will be like for me!! Thanks for your help!!
