My dog is mysteriously losing hair under his eyes.. HELP?

He is a maltese and there are bald spots on either side of his snout just under his eyes. Recently we have microwaved his wet food (Pedigree) so he would be more willing to eat it. I don't know if the microwaving is the cause. He is also scratching his face. Does anyone know anything about this or have any suggestions?
