In the book The Scarlet Letter, what does Hawthorne potray besides his contrition towards his ancestors.?

I'm thinking he tried to do an allusion to the salem which trials, the halfway covenant and all other things that happened in his time but, since he seems to likes to illuminate us on how majestic or animated the forest was i was thinking it had to do with something geographic as well (correct me if I'm wrong).
