Need help identifying a berry shrub or small tree....?

about 8 feet tall, with multiple limbs growing from one root ball. Limb are small and twiggy, and no leaves present right now. I thought it was a crepe myrtle by the leaves I spotted on it earlier in the month, but it has small, black berries present on it now with no leaves, so I don't think it was was I thought. I only recently bought the house and have no knowledge of what type of blooms it might have had. No thorns present and wood looks to be yellow when cut. Berries are sweet smelling and have several small seeds inside each.
