My car idles real bad and sputters while driving what could it be?

i have a 1998 for explorer sport,it idles really rough,and when i go to take off it cuts out real bad, and we found out that our oil smells like gas, we have changed the spark plugs,changed the oil,changed the fuel filter and nothing has made it better. what could it be??
